ZAXXON Arcade Game Upright

First played at State Street Cinema in Augusta, ME

Description of Game:
Pilot your ship through the city destroying fuel tanks, missles, enemy planes and the evil Robot ZAXXON. This game has a special overhead 3-D view and graphics that were State of the Art for it's time.

Why:
This game was the one that got away for a LONG time. I wanted a ZAXXON since I started collecting. I really didn't play it much when it came out but I always marveled at the excellent graphics and it was the first game I'd seen with a flight stick instead of the standard ball top joystick found on many games of the ERA.

I missed out on a couple on Ebay, then I tried to pick one up at an auction in New Jersey but someone wanted it more than me and I was outbid. Finally I was at Quarter Arcade one day and Anthony had one he was willing to let go.

The Side Art was real important for this one because it is an "End Game" Meaning it was on the end of the row so the sides were fully visible. Most of the time you can hide beat up sides when games are right next to each other but this game was on the end of a row AND was the first game you were going to see when you walked into my Arcade so I wanted it to be nice. Well the sides on this one are almost perfect. An operator in MA only was in the business for a few years and the games sat for a while untouched. Thanks Anthony!!!

I also installed the FREE PLAY/HIGH SCORE kit that Arcade Shop sells. I have had nothing but good results with it and am very pleased. A note to anyone installing it though. You have to push REALLY hard to seat the pins onto the PCB to get them to seat just right. I also bent the pins on my Z-80 chip installing it the first time. Thanks again to Anthony for sending me out another right away to get it back up and running.

All in all a fine example of a company taking a chance trying something new, ZAXXON was one of the top earning games of it's time and continues to impress collectors and new players to this day. I purchased a T-shirt that says ZAXXON/ZAXXOFF. Think of the Clapper Commercial....
